Will straightening natural hair constantly lessen its ability to be kinky?

I am going natural (7 months now). I straighten my natural hair to blend with the perm that is still on the ends, but I want to be a versatile natural. I want to be able to wear curls and fros and straight styles so I was wondering if I had to stay on one side of the fence?
